Our story

Great Wheatley Vineyard was born out of a love of wine and a passion to create something very special on our land.

We are a boutique vineyard planted in 2021. Our vines have been carefully selected to thrive in the clay soil of our terroir to create high quality grapes.

We endeavour to bring the hard work of our vineyard family to the forefront by creating a range of single varietal wines that showcase the quality and potential for making world-class wines here in the Crouch Valley Region.

Our ethos embraces a single fundamental goal: to make outstanding wine.

The collection

We are creating four varieties: Bacchus, Pinot Noir Rose, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Red.

  • Bacchus & Chardonnay
  • Pinot Noir & Rosé

Our label

Our label illustrates the topography of the land around the historical Manor House of Wheatley, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, with ‘X’ marking the ‘House on the Hill’.

Meet our winemakers

Meet the people responsible for crafting our exceptional premium wine collection. These skilled and passionate professionals are behind the cultivation, harvesting, and production processes that transform carefully selected grapes into the exquisite wines that grace our collection.

Duncan McNeill

Viticulturist

Born and bred into a dairy farming family based in Leeds, Duncan McNeill always knew that he wanted to work in agriculture but struggled to find the right sector for him until moving out to New Zealand in 2000.

Having learnt his trade in established wine growing countries, he and his wife Nadine now head up McNeill Vineyard Management, currently looking after 124-acres of vines, spread across the Crouch Valley wine region of Essex.

Ben Smith

Winemaker

For someone who was a dedicated beer drinker until his second year at university, Ben has certainly made his mark on the world of wine in the time since.

Inspired by the creativity and endless possibilities of making good wine, he's embraced a unique, sustainable mission and is leading our absolute commitment to quality.

Our vineyard

We're very proud of the progress our vineyard has made over the last few years; from an untouched field right through to final harvest.
